The Houghton County Republicans hosted a Lincoln Day Dinner on Friday, August 29, 2008 that was enjoyed by guests from across the county, district and state. Republican candidates addressed the crowd in person and via video conference technology.

Special guests included:
Saul Anuzis, Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party spoke to us from the Twin Cities as he has been attending meetings in preparation for the Republican National Convention starting on Monday, September 1, 2008.

Governor John Engler shared his support for Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Clifford Taylor. Justice Taylor explained why his race is important to maintain the conservative balance on the court to evaluate issues that come before the Michigan Supreme Court based on the strict interpretation on “the law” instead of imposing “personal activism” from the bench.

State Representative Jack Hoogendyk who is challenging Senator Carl Levin for the US Senate thanked us for our support in his race and stressed how his conservative record as a State Representative will be brought to Washington to end 30 years of Liberal views and policies being promoted by Levin.

State Representative Tom Casperson is our candidate for US Congress. He will bring his pro-family, pro-life, and pro-business background to represent not only the First Congressional District of Michigan but for the whole state. Tom also pointed out that while in the state legislature he has maintained a 100% pro-life record in comparison to Bart Stupak’s congressional record of 70%.

110th District State Representative candidate John Larson shared how it was time for the 110th District to hold its own TEA Party He will go to Lansing to reduce Taxes which has crippled not only families but businesses here in the state. As an educator (7th Grade Social Studies teacher in the CLK School System), he will be an advocate for Education to aid both students and teachers and school districts. And finally for Accountability. Each voter needs to be accountable on how engaged we are in the election process and each elected official must be held accountable to their constituents.

On the County Level there were a number of candidates who will not be facing a challenge in their races, but asked for the continued support from the party and voters.

Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean
Houghton County Treasurer Kathleen Beattie
Houghton County Commissioner District #1 Ed Jenich
Houghton County Commissioner District #2 Dennis Barrette

In the races with incumbents, our candidates would appreciate the support and votes to help them win their races:
John Sullivan, for Houghton County Drain Commissioner
Craig Brewer, for Houghton County Commissioner District #3
Matt Huuki, for Houghton County Commissioner District #5

On behalf of the Houghton County Republican’s Board of Directors, I would like to thank a few additional guests who attended our dinner, some traveling from a long distance - even from the Lower Peninsula:
Judy Emmons, State Representative 70th District
Laura Toy, former State Representative and former State Senator and now Coalitions Chair for Women for John McCain
Barbara Schafer and her husband Robert, from Gladwin - Barb is the Treasurer for the First District GOP
Don Keith, Keweenaw County Commissioner and Chairman
John Drennan, Chairman of the Baraga County Republicans

Here is media coverage that appeared in The Daily Mining Gazette on the naming of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as the Vice President nominee for John McCain.

HOUGHTON - John McCain’s surprising pick of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for his vice-presidential candidate has generated a flurry of excitement among party members, Republican candidates and officials said Friday night at the Republicans’ Lincoln Day dinner in Houghton.

State Rep. Tom Casperson, who is running against Bart Stupak in the U.S. House race, called Palin a “fantastic” pick. He said Palin has credentials as a Washington outsider, and is confident in her beliefs.

“I’ve never seen anything like this, to be honest with you,” he said. “I think we’re getting more and more excited about nominating John McCain.”

State Rep. candidate John Larson said Palin brings a “commonality of experience” to the ticket.

“She can relate to all Americans,” he said. “She’s a mother, been involved in education, been active in her community. Rather than just complain, she’s gotten involved tried to have a positive influence, and make a difference. I think that’s someone everyone in the U.S. can relate to.”
