Where’s Bart Stupak?
While Republicans Remain in Washington to Debate Energy, Stupak Voted to Take Five-Week Vacation
Washington- Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) sided with his party leadership last week and voted for a five-week vacation without addressing America’s energy crisis. Now, Republicans are protesting in Washington and calling on Speaker Pelosi to convene an emergency session of Congress to hold a vote on drilling:
“But the GOP lawmakers, many of them among the most conservative in the Republican Conference, clearly felt energized by their demand that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) call the House back into session to vote on offshore oil drilling.”
“… Reps. Tom Price (R-Ga.) and Mike Pence (R-Ind.) led a spontaneous revolt to protest the Democrats’ decision to adjourn the House for the five-week August recess without giving the minority party a chance to speak out on rising gas prices. Even after Democrats turned off the lights and microphones, and with TV cameras shut down, Republicans kept talking and chanting, ‘Drill, drill, drill!’” (Politico, 8/5/08)
Now, the question for Bart Stupak is simple: Does Stupak think that Speaker Pelosi should call Congress back into session to vote on energy?
Or will Stupak continue to ignore the overwhelming majority of Americans who support Republican efforts to increase American oil drilling? Now that Stupak has some time off back in his district, he should at least take the time to explain to his constituents why he voted to take a vacation instead of staying in Washington to deliver real solutions for America ’s energy crisis.
