Don’t Sock it to Me!

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

It’s been quite a while since I have posted here. I thought I would hold up my duty to the First District and post something I just posted on Grizzly Groundswell, regarding political candidates appearing on comedy shows on TV.

This has got to be one of my political pet peeves. Along with politicians forcing me to think their kids are cute, as I have previously ranted on Michigan Redneck II. Ever since Richard Nixon went on “Laugh In” to deliver a deadpan delivery of “Sock it to me” there has been some sort of “coolness” factor added to campaigns. Don’t get me wrong, I love and adore Richard Nixon. Mostly because he was talking about welfare reform back in the day. Back in the late sixties and seventies everyone said he was crazy. Now look at how bloated this welfare “entitlements” have gotten. Sorry, off topic. I have also seen reruns of “Laugh-In.” It was a funny awesome show. So I have nothing against that show, or any of it’s modern copiers.

Perhaps I am a bit old school, but I think candidates, especially presidential, should stay off the comedy shows. This got me thinking about this after John McCain was on “Saturday Night Live” last weekend. All while growing up, it would happen occasionally, but now everytime I turn around, a candidate is trying to “ham it up” on TV. I am not picking on John McCain, I also don’t want to see Barrack Obama or Hillary Clinton on these shows either. At first, I thought, it wouldn’t be too bad if an elected officials, who aren’t running for anything, were on these shows. But then I realized, it is just as silly.

I think candidates should be a bit more dignified. They need to stop “being one of us.” I don’t want “one of us” to be president. Although sometimes, I think “one of us” could do a better job. I understand that they need to get face and airtime. That is what the news shows are. These news shows are for asking serious questions for serious candidates. But then again the line between serious news and entertainment has been blurred in the past few years. Turn on the cable news programs and whatever’s up with Britney, Lindsay or Paris is “BREAKING NEWS.” What on earth? I thought that’s what the Hollywood Channel, or whatever it is called, is for.

Basically, what it boils down to is, just a mere distraction from the issues. If he is funny, he will do the will of the American people, or so the thinking goes.

Thank you for paying attention to my rant.

Where is Barack Obama’s “Superior” Judgment?

Friday, March 14th, 2008

When Barack Obama is questioned about his lack of “political experience” or “legislative achievements” he is quick to say that he makes and will make the “Correct” decisions that will face him. He implies that he HAS SUPERIOR JUDGEMENT compared to the other Presidential Candidates.

The past couple of days the media has been starting to cover some of the sermon’s of Barack Obama’s pastor and spiritual mentor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, from the Trinity United Church of Christ. Some of Rev. Wright’s views are extreme but Barack Obama says that he does not agree with everything Rev. Wright says ….

Here are some of the concerns being exposed: Obama’s Spiritual Adviser Questioned U.S. Role in Spread of HIV, Sept. 11 Attacks
by FOXNews.com
Friday, March 14, 2008

Wright can be seen questioning America’s role in the spreading of the HIV virus that leads to AIDS. In another speech, made in the days after 9/11, he suggested that American foreign policy invited the terror attacks.

“We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki. And we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye,” Wright said.

“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because of stuff we have done overseas is now brought back into our own backyard. America is chickens coming home to roost.”

The pastor also said: “The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color. The government lied.”

Additional comments by Rev. Wright:

Prior to his retirement last month, Wright delivered commentary from the pulpit in which he praised Obama, as well as remarks focusing on the racial divide between Obama and Clinton.

“There is a man here who can take this country in a new direction,” Wright said during his Jan. 13 sermon.

During a Christmas sermon, Wright tried to compare Obama’s upbringing to Jesus at the hands of the Romans.

“Barack knows what it means living in a country and a culture that is controlled by rich white people,” Wright said. “Hillary would never know that.

“Hillary ain’t never been called a nigger. Hillary has never had a people defined as a non-person.”

In a Jan. 13 sermon, Wright said:

“Hillary is married to Bill, and Bill has been good to us. No he ain’t! Bill did us, just like he did Monica Lewinsky. He was riding dirty.”

Late Thursday, the Obama campaign said it has distanced itself from certain comments made by the pastor. But it did not fully repudiate Wright himself — as some critics have called for.

“Senator Obama has said before that he profoundly disagrees with some of the statements and positions of Reverend Wright, who has preached his last sermon as pastor at the church,” Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said. “Senator Obama deplores divisive statements whether they come from his supporters, the supporters of his opponent, talk radio, or anywhere else.”

My question for Barack Obama- You have been a member of Rev. Wright’s church for 20 years. If these comments are typical ones Rev Wright has espoused for 20 years, how can you say that you do not agree with all of his divisive attitudes.

If I was a member of a church that expressed these views, I would not stay at that church I would go elsewhere!. Why do you overlook those views and remain as a member? If this is indicative of your “Superior Judgment” it is not very wise.

I also have read that Rev. Jeremiah Wright holds a position on your campaign or as a campaign advisor. If this is the case, you need to rethink his place with your campaign. Do you really reject his extreme views or do you uphold his views?

Democrats Place Our Security at Risk…

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

…Duh

But I will let David, Rush’s bro, Limbaugh explain that better.

Democrats downplay the scope of terrorist threat and constantly obstruct our efforts to pursue this “overblown” enemy.
immunity provisions from the bill for later treatment. But everyone knows — except voters the Democrats are trying to dupe — that if you carve out that portion of the bill, Democrats will try to prevent it from ever coming to the floor.

Sadly, I think duping voters is the only thing Dums, oopsie Dems, are successful at.

Democrats duplicitously claim the GOP just wants to protect another group of evil corporations. But can they point to one real victim who the telecoms have abused while assisting the government in saving American lives? Can they point to a real motive the telecoms would have in harming such nonexistent victims?
But Democrats say we should never have attacked and that al-Qaida wouldn’t be there if we hadn’t. We should have finished the job in Afghanistan, they say, because that’s where al-Qaida trained to attack us on 9/11.

But has anyone ever challenged the Democrats on the absurdity of this position? If we were justified in attacking al-Qaida in Afghanistan because they trained there to attack us, then why aren’t we justified in fighting them in Iraq since they are attacking us there?

Besides, we have the right and duty to attack them wherever they are. They are the enemy.

Democrats pretend that if we will just withdraw from Iraq, al-Qaida will forgive us and leave us alone. (Kathy’s interruption; Ain’t that sweet. Let’s hold hands and sing koombya[sp?]) They will never leave us alone as long as they are capable of fighting us, no matter when we leave. But if we do leave before completing the job, al-Qaida will be emboldened and become an even fiercer enemy, which will increase Middle East instability and invite further attacks against our interests abroad and at home.

I don’t care how charismatic, nice, eloquent or brilliant Obama is. If he were to pursue precipitous withdrawal and the other terrorist-friendly policies he and Democrats support, our national security will be exponentially imperiled. It’s time for Republicans to quit being on the defensive on these issues and take this fight to the public. [more here]

Emphasis mine

I just don’t trust Barack on his “Sunshine and lollipops,” to the point I think I trust Hillary more. Just look at his racist “minister.” According to FOX News, this morning, “Reverend” Wright is planning on resigning because of his pro-Obama speeches he made after Obama announced his candidacy, oh, and along with his anti-American, racist, anti-Semite statements.

Who Should be McCain’s VP?

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Over at The American Spectator is an article speculating on who could be John McCain’s VP.

The Nation’s Pulse
McCain-Somebody ‘08
By John Tabin
Published 3/5/2008 2:46:25 AM

With last night’s victories, John McCain crossed the 1191-delegate line, winning the nomination. Now he has the luxury of standing back, letting Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama beat each other up and raising money for the Fall race.

And what about that running mate? The question for McCain is what function his pick should serve. McCain certainly doesn’t need to ballast his ticket with age and gravitas, as George W. Bush did when he selected Dick Cheney. McCain will be 72 when the next president takes the oath of office, and might want to go with a relatively young running mate who can carry the torch into the 2016 election. That would rule out Fred Thompson, who will be 66 on inauguration day.

As much as I hate to say this, It is true about Fred’s age. Unfortunately, this is his only hindrance. He was a thee true conservative over all of those who had run in the ‘08 POTUS race.

Since McCain will be running against a Democratic candidate who is either black or female, some have suggested he practice a bit of tokenism in his selection. Colin Powell is too old (70) and too unpopular with conservatives. Condoleezza Rice seems uninterested in electoral politics, and in any case would muddy McCain’s foreign policy message, which has emphasized his track record of criticizing the Bush administration from the right on the management of the Iraq occupation. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is 64, which may be too old.

Michael Steele, former lieutenant governor of Maryland, would be high on the shortlist if he’d won his 2004 Senate race, but he didn’t. Other names in this category that get tossed around include congresswoman Marsha Blackburn, former congressman J.C. Watts, and Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin.

I am willing to admit there is some case to this. But at the same point I would like to think the Republican Party should be above “identity” politics. Some of the people mentioned above would be great, such as Condi Rice, Michael Steele or J.C. Watts. The others, I agree on the age thing or I don’t know too much about them. But I do believe that if they are the running mate, they should be chosen based solely on merit.

The article goes on to mention geography balance.

Less abrasive southern Governors Sonny Perdue of Georgia, Haley Barbour of Mississippi, and especially Mark Sanford of South Carolina might be able to satisfy southerners and social conservatives without angering other factions of the party.

Now, I really like Haley Barbour.

McCain might follow this logic and select his friend Rudy Giuliani. It would dismay social conservatives, who are already slightly skittish about McCain, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t do it if he decides he wants to. [Read all the possible choices here]

Mitt Romney is left out of the “equation.” If it can’t be Fred, I would like it to be Romney. I think he needs to have a running mate who would be good for the economy. Thoughts?

Barack Slapping

Friday, March 7th, 2008

Warning: Some things may be offensive to my fellow First Districters, apologies in advance.

It has been a rather busy blogging day for me today. Some of you may know that I blog on Michigan Redneck II. I want to keep my loyalties to my personal blog, while keeping my loyalties to the First District, by contributing to First GOP Blogs.

I have been following the ‘08 election since the ‘07 Michigan GOP Convention, after seeing Mitt Romney speak there. I started supporting Mitt Romney, then went to supporting and blog Mike Huckabee, then Fred Thompson, then back to Romney. Once Romney dropped out of the race, I did not support anyone but continued to follow the POTUS race. I am staying neutral on John McCain. As odd as it sounds, I am still supporting the party on state and national level, just staying neutral on McCain.

So I figured that I could blog about issues that concern me and work on blasting on the Democrat candidates. Most of what I have found to blast on, in conservative news sources has been about Barack Obama. Not much on Hillary Clinton. What I have found about Barack has been rather scary. Him, those he associates with and those his associates associate with are not the sunshine and lollipops that he portrays with his happy words of “hope,” “change” and “Yes we can.” His “minister” Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., pastor of Obama’s Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago is a racist and Isreal hater. Let’s not get into “Reverend” Wright’s revering of “Loony Far-off-can’t” AKA Louis Farahkan(sp?). At least not yet.
I am a firm believer in “guilt by association.” These associations are scary. These are people I do not want to see either of them come anywheres near the White House. Sometimes I think Barack’s talk of sunshine and lollipops could be a manipulation. He may not be as “innocent” and “wet behind the ears” as he seems and that is worse than outright attacking.

That being said, we know what Hillary is about. Or do we? Could she actually be worse than what we see? As I said above, I was a Mike Huckabee supporter. Even though there were things I did not like about him towards the end, there were still things I liked about him. When he wasn’t even a blip on the radar he said to not underestimate Hillary Clinton. Where would he get such a thought?
He had been the former Governor of Arkansas. Wasn’t Hillary’s husband, oh what’s his name, the Governor of Arkansas also? Mike Huckabee started his Arkansas political career as the Lieutenant Governor to Jim Guy Tucker. Jim Guy Tucker was the Lieutenant Governor to Bill Clinton before Bill was elected to president. Mike Huckabee watched Bill Clinton climb his way to the top, even before he got into politics. He knows about the “Clinton political machine.” He claimed that Clinton’s had a hand in Arkansas Democrat politics even after leaving the state. When I had blogged for his campaign I recall finding an article where he said that he “knew a secret about Hillary.” Probably more than one, but I digress.

So all in all, this is why I do not want to see either one of them become president. Unfortunately, one of them will be the Dum, I mean Dem nominee. I just don’t think Hillary should be left off the hook. There are some out there that may think that if Barack is knocked around a bit Hillary will be the nominee and she will be easier to beat. I am not so sure. Since it is not known who will be the Dum (oops did it again) nominee and they are both scary the negativity on both should start coming out now. That way, regardless of who their nom is, the negative stuff will be remembered about whomever once the general election rolls around.
